Laberintos Mentales: Illumination is an original contemporary painting exploring the human mind as a labyrinth — a territory of fragmentation, introspection, confusion, and ultimately, the search for inner clarity.

The concept behind Laberintos Mentales was born from an experience that profoundly shaped my artistic path.

During a journey through Southeast Asia, I arrived at a Buddhist monastery in Luang Prabang, Laos, where I began painting inside the temple. Young monks became curious about my work and started showing me their sketchbooks filled with mandalas.

One of them pointed at my paintings and described them as “labyrinth mandalas.” Later, an English-speaking monk explained that he saw in those forms a representation of confusion, self-reflection, and the search for one’s own center.

I eventually stayed at the monastery for several weeks, sharing artistic techniques with the young monks while experiencing their daily rituals and way of life. That encounter became one of the roots of my visual language and the beginning of Laberintos Mentales.

Years later, the labyrinth has evolved.

In Illumination, it is no longer simply a geometric structure. The human face itself becomes the labyrinth.

Eyes, mouth, skin, and anatomical fragments emerge and disappear within layers of abstraction. Deep blues, turquoise, green, red, and white move across an intense yellow field, creating a visual tension between chaos and clarity.

The portrait becomes a psychological landscape — a place where identity can be fragmented, explored, questioned, and reconstructed.

Illumination is not the absence of confusion, but the moment we begin to find our way through it.

Perhaps, in order to find ourselves, we first have to get lost within ourselves.
